Building a great future

Tresham College Bricklaying FE

Lucky for the construction industry, 13 apprentices are being trained up for the future by GRT Builders.

Of the trainees, 11 are bricklayers and two work in scaffolding. Ben Cocking,18, of Beeston is off to fly the flag for Bedfordshire at the Guild of Bricklayers Awards in Liverpool on June 20th.

Building a great future PR Story

Ben is one of two apprentices who study at Bedford College and taking part in the finals. Ben will compete in the Junior Section and Elliot Barnes of St Neots will also be competing within the Senior Section of the finals.

Co-Directors Graham Paxton and Rob Dickens at GRT Builders are pleased to see their apprentice’s success.

Graham said:
Our company has had apprentices with Bedford College going back to the 1990s and we renewed our relationship with them when working on the Riverside development opposite the college campus. Now our company is going from strength to strength with our new offices on Stewartby the old A421. Happily we have some great young talent coming through.”

Gina Bubbins Director of Business Development at The Bedford College Group works with companies who employ construction apprentices across the region said:

We are delighted that a successful company like GRT Builders is using its local college to complete the training of its apprentices. They are making an important contribution to the local economy and jobs market.
We wish Ben and Elliot every success in the national competition
.”

Michael Curtis Course Manager for brickwork, himself a former builder, said:

This a fantastic achievement and shows how our apprentices are maintaining the highest standards in the fast-growing construction industry. These are just two of the talented craftspeople coming through to study with us thanks to collaboration between our college and employers who are investing in skilled workforces for the future. The foundations for the next generation of top class bricklayers are being laid here at Bedford College.

Ben, a former Sandy Upper School student, began studying with Bedford College after taking part in a “Taster” day and joined a full-time bricklaying course. He was spotted as having great potential and offered an apprenticeship with GRT Builders.
